Countrywide polio drive begins today

A nationwide campaign against polio begins in the country on Monday which will target 18.4 million children under the age of five, according to Punjab Emergency Operations Coordinator Dr Munir Ahmad.

He said that as per National Immunization Technical Advisory Group’s recommendation, steps were being taken to prepare a booster anti-polio dose for children above five years of age.

Radio Pakistan Karachi correspondent Javed Samejo reports that the six-day campaign would be launched in six districts of Karachi including Malir, Korangi South west, East and Central and some other districts of Sindh.

Sources in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department said that more than 6.5 million children up to five years of age will be administered anti-polio drops during three days campaign in the province and FATA.

Three days anti-polio drive also commences in thirty districts of Balochistan on Monday in which over 2.4 million children below the age of five will be administered polio drops.

Baltistan Health Services department will hold polio campaign tomorrow in Skardu, Shigar, Kharmang, Ghanche, Roundo and Gultari.

According to official sources, a total of over seven hundred and thirty seven thousand children would be administered anti-polio drops in Azad Kashmir.

A meeting of FATA Polio Task Force will be held on Monday in Peshawar with Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Iqbal Zafar Jhagra in the chair.

The meeting will review progress and results of previous anti-polio drives in the tribal areas.

Representatives of UNICEF, World Health Organization and other concerned authorities will attend the meeting.
