After approving the scheme for providing interest free loans to farmers, the government has now decided to give smart loans to young doctors. The move calls for applause as it will help extend self-employment opportunities to unemployed doctors. As per the official announcement, doctors and allied health professionals will be able to get smart loans up to Rs 700,000 under a scheme of the Punjab Health Foundation (PHF). It is pertinent to mention here that the PHF is already providing interest free loans to doctors between Rs 1.2 million and Rs 2.5 million. Although the step taken by the government deserves praise and commendation however, the government must also do something for hundreds of unpaid postgraduate trainee doctors who are working in various public sector hospitals across the province.
