The Green Line Bus

A number of Green Line (GL) bus projects were started in Karachi. Former City Nazim Naimatullah Khan started green bus project buses imported from Sweden, Former City Nazim Mustafa Kamal reared the green bus project with locally manufactured buses of HinoPak company and Daewoo company and now Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif also has started green bus project but interesting thing that all these Green Line projects are on the same route from Surjani Town to MA Jinnah Road.

There are so many routes the buses can take, but why does everyone wants to start the project on the same route. First thing is done that that buses which started by Former City Nazim should be revived and the second thing that Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif made separate boards to run these buses, which are independent to run the affairs of the buses. Because, if these buses are given to Sindh government transport department to operate these buses then its fate is also going to be the same as the former Nazim buses which were stopped after their tenure was over. No system could survive without good governance and rule of law, and both lacked in the city. In the past, almost 10 transport systems including the ‘Karachi Transport Corporation’, the ‘Karachi Circular Railway’, the ‘Green Bus project’ and the ‘Karachi Road Transport Corporation’ had failed because of these very reasons.

Karachi’s Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will no doubt help reduce people’s travel woes, but it comes at the cost of environmental loss. The country’s financial hub already lacks greenery. Last year’s deadly heat wave directly added to environmental degradation. There is no denying the fact that development is necessary, but it should not come at the cost of the environment. We need to plant more trees. Our city planners should keep environmental concerns in mind while undertaking the developments.

According to some reports, thousands of trees will be chopped down to make way for the long route of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Karachi. The project managers plan, to replant trees during the course of the construction. The central greenbelt of the road that is lined with thousands of trees but these trees are cut every time but never planted again, in Former Nazim’s tenure the promises were made to plant thousands of new trees but only few hundred trees are planted.

New Pedestrians Bridge is made for the construction of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Karachi so the old Pedestrians Bridge is removed which is mostly located in district central should be reallocated to some other places like Signal Free Corridor 1 the road which goes to site area to Hassan Square at many points there is a desperate need of Pedestrians Bridge.
