Govt taking steps to revive PIA, Senate told

The Senate was informed on Wednesday that the government is taking concrete steps to revive Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as a modern day commercial airline according to the international standards.

Replying to a question during the question hour, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad informed the House that currently Rs 177 billion loan is outstanding against PIA. He said that Rs 16 billion were injected in 2014 for making outstanding payments.

He said in 2015, $52 million were injected in PIA for acquiring 15 aircrafts on dry lease. He said the government had approved guarantees worth Rs 29 billion against the loans obtained by PIA.

He said fleet modernisation, human resources rationalisation and operational restructuring were also being done for uplift of the national flag carrier airline.
