Looking at the trailer and the way Sonakshi Sinha is promoting her film ‘Akira’, it wasn’t wrong to predict that this action thriller was likely to witness a good opening at the box office on Friday, September 2.
The film is directed by AR Murugadoss who earlier gave us an action-thriller, ‘Holiday: A Soldier In Never Off Duty’, starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles, which was applauded by the audience and the critics alike, but it looks like ‘Akira’ couldn’t rise to the challenge and opened to a poor response with just 15 per cent collections in the morning shows.
‘Akira’ was primarily aiming for that set of audience which saw Rani Mukerji’s ‘Mardaani’ and Anushka Sharma’s ‘NH10’.
On the other hand, Bharat Bandh on September 2 can also be one of the reasons why Akira’s box office collection on day one fell.
The teaser, poster and the promotions in different cities had created a tremendous buzz but the theatrical that released two months before the film’s release was unable to hold the attention of the viewers.
It’s safe to say that ‘Akira’ now depends on word of mouth.
Another surprise for the fans can be the alleged cameo of superstar Akshay Kumar in the film which may also help boost the box office numbers.
The opening of the film is very similar to ‘Sarabjit’ which released a few months back.
Interestingly, this is the first time Sonakshi will be seen in a strong female-centric role. The film sees her delivering some power-packed action stunts. Interestingly, it also has Anurag Kashyap as the main villain.
While Murugadoss’ ‘Holiday…’ had witnessed a good opening, ‘Akira’, sadly couldn’t surpass it.
‘Akira’ starring Sonakshi Sinha released worldwide today.
