Sub-Committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms approved the biometric system to register overseas Pakistanis enabling them to cast their votes for their favourite candidates through the internet.

“National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has removed the reservations of the committee about casting of votes of overseas Pakistanis through the internet,” Sub-Committee Convener Zahid Ahmed said.

“For this purpose, we have decided to float the tender for biding for special software. After preparing software, first, we will register overseas Pakistanis through the internet by using their National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) and passport. After registration, we will allot secret code. They will cast their vote through the internet by sitting in their homes,” Sub-Committee Convener Zahid Ahmed told this to the parliamentary correspondents after committee’s meeting.

He said that a security system would be built up through software, such as used in a banking system, for registration and voting process. “We will ask some questions at the time of registration and vote casting. We will seek answers to some specific questions through the internet for verification on the voting day then a ballot paper will appear on the screen,” he said, adding that after the appearance of the ballot paper, the overseas Pakistani could cast a vote to his/her, favourite candidate.
