Iraq has asked Saudi Arabia to replace its ambassador to Baghdad Thamer al Sabhan, who has come under sharp criticism time and again for his controversial actions and interference in the country’s domestic affairs.

Iraqi foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmad Jamal while giving an interview to an American news organisation stated that the country’s government had formally forwarded an application to Saudi Arabia stating that there were threats of Shia-Sunni conflicts emerging in the country as a result of Saudi ambassador to Iraq Samar al Sabhan’s involvement in certain activities thus demanding his immediate replacement.

The spokesperson said that the Saudi ambassador made certain remarks regarding Iran’s involvement in the country’s affairs which were in contrast with the facts, causing outrage amongst the people of Iraq and forcing them to demand the Saudi ambassador’s replacement. He further added that no one shall be allowed to interfere in the country’s internal affairs.

Sabhan has on occasions received warnings from Iraqi officials for interference in the country’s internal affairs.
