MQM offices locked across Karachi as crackdown continues

Crackdown against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) continues as law enforcement agencies locked and unit offices across the city on Thursday.

Offices of the political party in Federal B Area, North Nazimabad, North Karachi and other areas have been closed.

Notices have been displayed outside each of the offices closed by the security personnel that warn of action against anyone who tries to open the party centres.

On the other hand, law enforcement agencies have nabbed two women workers involved in attack on private television channel while a criminal associated with militant wing of the party was arrested in Liaquatabad.

The crackdown was launched by Rangers and other law enforcement agencies after MQM Chief Altaf Hussain delivered a speech via telephone and instigated workers to attack a private television channel. The gathering, on incitement of the party leader, raised anti-state slogans.

Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif took notice and telephoned Rangers Sindh Director General. The Director General was ordered to take immediate action against the violent workers.

In the aftermath of the incident, Dr Farooq Sattar and Amir Liaquat, leaders of the party workers in Pakistan were detained for a night.

They were released the next day when both of the leaders held a press conference among others present including Khawaja Izharul Hassan, Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly and announced detachment from Altaf Hussain.

Amir Liaquat went on to quit his political career later that day and cited turmoil in the party for the decision.

In the latest development in party affairs, Waseem Akhtar was elected Mayor of Karachi on Wednesday after polling was conducted around eight and a half months after local government elections were organised in Sindh.

The same day, Altaf Hussain announced to step aside and trust rabita committee in Pakistan with leadership until his health bettered.

The announcement came in after Dr Sattar, during his press conference justified Hussain s anti-state sentiments by saying that such statement were result of mental pressure and depression he suffers from.
