Even though Georgia coach Kirby Smart has been skirting around the question for weeks, Nick Chubb is slated to play in the Bulldogs’ season opener against North Carolina, media reported.

The running back suffered a gruesome knee injury during Georgia’s game against Tennessee last year. Both Chubb and the team have worked extensively to get him back to playing shape.

Smart seemed to finally confirm that Chubb will be on the field, with Chubb’s name the first listed off when asked who will be playing against the Tar Heels.

“I think everybody’s in line to get carries. Nick’s in line, Elijah’s (Holyfield) in line, Brian’s (Herrien) in line, Brendan Douglas is in line, Tae Crowder’s in line. All those guys are in line to get carries,” Smart said.

It’s unclear how much playing time Chubb will get, but Smart indicated Chubb could not be more ready to play.

“He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do and that’s all we can do,” Smart said. “He’s helped on special teams, he’s carried the ball, he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do.”

Tailback Sony Michel likely won’t be playing for Georgia on Sept. 3. He’s still recovering from a broken arm he sustained during a four wheeler accident in July and is still wearing the black “no contact” jersey in practice.
