Police has nominated Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Wasim Akhtar in the FIR related to May 12 incident.
Police have presented an interim challan before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday (today).
During a hearing of the case in an anti-terrorism court, police filed an interim challan which stated mayoral candidate of Karachi, Wasim Akhtar confessed to involvement in violent clashes on May 12.
The May 12 tragedy was one of the grimmest incidents in the history of Karachi when on the arrival of then Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Chaudhry several people were killed in armed clashes between workers of different political parties.
MQM’s nominated mayor Waseem Akhtar on Wednesday was shifted from the jail to the KMC building to cast his vote in the elections.
Earlier, Akhtar was brought to the KMC building in an armoured vehicle. Imprisoned MQM leaders Waseem Akhtar and Arshad Vohra are the party’s nominated candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Karachi.
Authorities have taken strict measures to maintain law and order to ensure the safety of voters in polling areas. Polling for the elections of Karachi’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts has begun. MQM has a simple majority of 214 seats out of the total 308; hence Akhtar is the favourite candidate to become the next Mayor of Karachi.
Any party that wants to have its candidate win the elections for Mayor needs to secure 155 seats. MQM has more than 60 additional seats, which brings its tally of seats to 214. In the previous local bodies elections held in Karachi, MQM had won a decisive victory by defeating all opponents comfortably.
