The United States has refused to criticise India for the institution of a sedition case against Amnesty International in India.

The US State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner said that the US supports the right to freedom of expression and assembly but asked the reporter to contact Banglore Police for more details into the investigation.

The observers said that his comment exposes the United States selective stance in dealing with issues of human rights violations.

To another question, Toner said the US supports all efforts between India and Pakistan that can contribute to a more stable and prosperous region and that includes meetings at any level between Indian and Pakistani officials.

“Our longstanding position has always been that India and Pakistan stand to benefit from a normalisation of relations and practical cooperation, and so we would encourage India and Pakistan to continue to engage in direct dialogue aimed at reducing tensions,” said Toner.
