A woman fell into Balakot’s River Kunhar and drowned while trying to take a selfie and his cousin also drowned in an attempt to save him in on Saturday.

“The woman standing on a rock slipped into the river and her cousin jumped into the water to rescue her but both were swept away,” stated Arshad Khan, head of Balakot Police Station, while speaking to reporters.

The local divers fished out the bodies and handed them over to their family.

The incident is the latest in a string of ‘selfie deaths’ that have occurred with the rise of smartphones. Earlier this week, a girl drowned after falling into River Kunhar while attempting to take a selfie. Her parents, who tried to save her, also drowned, officials said.

River Kunhar flows through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, at a hilly tourist spot in Beesian village, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Islamabad.

The deep, rocky and fast-flowing river is popular for white-water rafting.

On July 5, Peruvian police recovered the body of a South Korean tourist under a waterfall in the Amazon jungle, days after he fell in while taking a photo of himself.

A week earlier a 51-year-old German tourist plunged 200 metres (650 feet) to his death while posing for a photo on a mountainside at Peru’s top archaeological site, Machu Picchu.
