In a TV Channel’s program “Naya Pakistan” an important issue was discussed with reference to education. While discussing topic the participant teachers said that the real objectives of education remain confined to the class room. The host of the program pointed out that in the field of education one finds the biggest issue besides English is how to teach Pakistan Studies.
Education & government’s policies has not been able to decide what should be the mode of education in our schools. We are still debating whether the medium of instruction be English or Urdu. The elite schools have English medium and public schools prefer Urdu as medium of instruction. Students are involved in Grade and marks’ race instead of acquiring knowledge. The pursuit of learning has been transformed into cramming to get maximum marks.
The real knowledge is neither imparted nor interest created in the subjects taught. The result of this race is even the students securing 90-95 % marks or A grades lack basic knowledge & information to compete with other countries. Most of the students fail in English language & literature Exams. Their concepts about history as a whole lack clarity. Pakistan Studies does not attract their interest. Thus, the children lack factual information about our nation’s history and struggle for Independence.
As far as Pakistan Studies is concerned information must be provided in easy to understand manner so that students finds interest in the events and details of past history. Presently teaching of Pakistan Studies do not create interest in the subject matter rather aversion result into cramming to pass the exams. We must mend and improve our ways of teaching. The text books should contain facts & information written in easy words and interesting style so that students develop interest in learning and acquiring knowledge not just cramming.
We must make the process of learning interesting & it must start from home schooling & training by parents. Parents must give time to children. It must be made joint effort of the parents & teachers.
