Pakistan has launched a multi-level initiative to alleviate problems of distressed Pakistani workers employed with some contracting companies in Saudi Arabia who have failed to pay salaries and benefits to them.
The Pakistani effort follows Saudi King’s announcement last week of a 100 million Riyal revolving fund that will enable labour payments of such construction companies who have certified receivables on their public projects.

A team led by Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource DevelopmentPir Syed Sadaruddin Shah Rashidi and Managing Director of Overseas Pakistanis Foundation Habibur Rehman Gillani flew in the Saudi capital this week.
Prior to their visit, PM Nawaz Sharif announced Rs 50,000 one-time payment to families of over 10,000 workers who are facing financial stress here. Most of these expat workers belong to Saudi Oger, Bin Laden Group, Saad Contracting, and a few others. They shall have access to the SR18 million (Rs500 million) fund pool as well as the SR100 million Saudi labour fund pool until matters are eased out.
The team, accompanied by the Pakistani ambassador Manzur ul Haq have been doing rounds meeting the Saudi Labor and Health Minister and other senior officials here with the aim to mitigate fallout from these isolated incidents and find ways and means going forward.
The high-powered delegation also interacted at a community meeting at the embassy in which community leaders, members, workers shared their thoughts and ideas on solutions. Pak govt sponsored or public-private based benefits for expats such as unemployment pay, disability coverage etc, came under discussion.
