Both groups contesting local bodies election for the posts of district chairman, vice chairman, mayor and deputy mayor of Larkana have started their hectic efforts after their nomination forms were declared correct.
The PPP candidates are sure to win all four major seats which will be contested by their rivals. The PPP has nominated Muhammad Aslam Shaikh and Anwer Ali Luhar for the top slots of Larkana as mayor and deputy mayor of Larkana Municipal Corporation (LMC) respectively. They will contest elections against Peoples Party Workers candidate Awais Ali Abbasi for mayor and JUI-Fazal’s Mahmood-ul-Hassan Soomro for deputy mayor. For the posts of district council chairman and vice chairman, the PPP has nominated Khan Muhammad Sangroo and Abdul Hayee Shah respectively who will be contesting against PP Workers’ Sadiq Chandio and PML-Functional’s Syed Asghar Shah respectively. The nomination forms of all these candidates have been declared correct by the concerned returning officers.
Due to numerical edge of the PPP, it is hoped that the PPP candidates will come out with flying colours and win the elections but it will be a matter of record that they did not come out unopposed. The LMC has total 30 members strength out of which 22 belong to the PPP and eight belong to their opponents. Likewise, in district council, out of total 69 members, 63 belong to the PPP and only six are from their opposition. Meanwhile, the PPP opponents are said to be busy underground in trying to change loyalties of elected members belonging to the PPP to contest last leg of LG elections for which they have established contacts with some of them. The PPP candidate for mayor, Aslam Shaikh, when contacted, told reporters on Wednesday, that they were sure to win the elections of both LMC and DC with great margin. Elections are to be held on August 24.
