A local court on Friday sent US citizen Matthew Barrett, blacklisted under Foreigners Act, to Adiala Jail on a judicial remand for 14 days.

During the proceedings, the investigation officer told the court that the official at the consulate who gave Barrett a Pakistani visa should be interrogated.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) appealed the court to extend accused Barrett’s remand, while an investigative officer told the court that Barrett has told the lie at Pakistani Consulate in Houston for obtaining a Pakistani visa.

The court ordered to send Barrett to Adiala jail on a 14-day remand while accepting an appeal of investigative officer.

The defense alleged that the FIA had been bribed and was unable to produce any witnesses.

The FIA on Saturday arrested an American citizen, who was blacklisted over espionage of nuclear installations in Pakistan, upon his entry to Islamabad.

Matthew Craig Barrett, a US citizen, was blacklisted and deported from Pakistan in 2011 on his objectionable activities. The US citizen was later arrested from a guesthouse from the capital city the same day upon his entry into Islamabad.

In a statement to the court, Barrett stated that he had arrived in Pakistan on a visa issued by Pakistani Consulate in Houston.

About his previous visit, Barrett said he had arrived in Pakistan to visit his in-laws. He denied the charges of being a spy, saying he was not involved in such activities.
