United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on Wednesday held a seminar at private hotel in Lahore where Prison Management Information system (PMIS) was introduced.
The PMIS is designed to facilitate the prisons’ administration in operations such as admissions and release, FIR, under sections and warrants. The system also included a reporting module for facilitating several reports specified for presentation and utilisation at different levels.
Punjab Home Secretary Major (r) Azam Suleman the chief guest, stakeholders from the international community (donors), representatives from civil society and government officials were present on the occasion.
“All departments including forensic, prosecution, judiciary will be linked to PMIS. Finger print database, integrated software systems will be introduced and government of Punjab will be fully collaborating with these arrangements,” he said
National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), Punjab police and the judicial department will also collaborate with PMIS. 90 million rupees allocated for the inventory. Initially, the system is being installed in 20 prisons across Punjab.
Basic training on PMIS conducted for prison officials at the National Academy for Prisons Management (NAPA). Training session on PIMS were organised for senior prison officials of NAPA.
Over 17 training sessions were delivered to lower, mid-and upper-rank prison officials. The PMIS was introduced in 20 prisons of the province and draft prisons rules for Punjab were also drawn up.
Officer in Charge UNODC thanked Punjab home secretary, inspector general prisons and additional secretary including all the participants. She assured the attendees of UNODC’s continued support in enhancing the capacity of the prisons department.
