NA Opp says won’t accept Cyber Crimes Bill in current form

Lack of quorum in the National Assembly on Wednesday led to the deferment of Prevention of Electronic Crimes Bill, 2016.

State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Anusha Rehman Khan moved a motion to consider the bill as passed by the Senate.

However, opposing the bill, PPP Parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Syed Naveed Qamar said various segments of society had opposed different sections of the bill but the opposition proposed certain amendments to the bill, resulting in its passage from the Senate.

However, he said there were ambiguities in the bill that needed to be addressed.

MQM lawmaker Syed Ali Raza while opposing the bill said it would deprive the people of their basic rights, adding there were some reservations over 8 sections of the bill.

PTI legislator Ali Muhammad Khan also opposed the bill and said the government could use it against the opposition if it was passed in the present form.

He said some sections of the bill were against the freedom of speech and there was a need to amend them.

Dr Nafeesa Shah of PPP while opposing the bill said it should be reviewed thoroughly.

Shahibzada Tariqullah of Jamaat-i-Islami also opposed it.

Meanwhile, PPP member Imran Zafar Laghari pointed out the quorum which was not in order.

Later the House was adjourned to meet again on Thursday at 10.30am.
