Who’s responsible?

There is a competition in efficiency between the terrorists networks and the security agencies in a number of countries. Governments in the US and Britain were initially taken by surprise when terrorists struck to enact 9/11 in the former and 7/7 in the latter. Both however recovered from initial shock and overhauled their security agencies thus managing to stem the tide of terrorism. Shunning complacency, they continue to upgrade their system of information gathering and take timely action to foil the terrorists’ plans before these are implemented. Their proactive approach has ensured that there is no repeat of large scale terrorist attacks.

What happened in Quetta on Monday was indicative of intelligence failure. Combined with an abysmal inefficiency on the part of the civilian set up this led to one of the worst terrorist incidents in Balochistan’s history with over 70 dead and 100 injured. Gunning down Balochistan bar association president and soon after attacking the crowd of lawyers who had gathered inside the hospital to retrieve his dead body shows a well-coordinated plan on the part of the terrorists. It would not have succeeded if there was an efficient security system in the hospital to bar the entry of explosives or suicide bombers. Instead of a proactive approach to terrorism, the agencies and the government have developed a reactive approach promising action against terrorists after they have done the harm.

Pakistan’s leadership is not tired of telling the nation how important it considers the CPEC. It also talks about the enemies’ designs to create hindrances in the completion of the project. If the claim that RAW was behind the incident is correct those entrusted with maintaining security in the province are to be blamed for their failure to meet the challenge and save the lives of innocent citizens. One cannot stop enemy agencies from planning to create mayhem in Pakistan. But one expects those entrusted the task of maintaining security to foil the designs.

  1. As usual Pakistan is in denial about who the enemy really is…they ignore the Darul Uluum Haqqania school for terrorism and even give them government money…and when another Taliban radical Islamic militant commits suicide while killing others…they blame the neighbors. The problem is obvious to the outside observers…

    • The enemy are the people of Pakistan themselves; they love their predatory democracy and keep electing the status quo of corrupt autocrats again and again with out end.

  2. The failure of counter terrorism policy is a crime that is unforgivable. Nawaz Sharif has failed to protect the people and the state from this scourge. He has also miserably failed to incorporate the people in countering terrorism. US and England involved the entire population and combined it with technology to achieve success. We have failed in this. People are unwilling to report or help for fear of reprisals. Nobody will be there to protect them. In a couple of weeks this will be forgotten. The worst terror attack in our history was Shahadat of over 140 young school children. We held meetings made songs and media had a field day mostly desecrating the sad event as they are doing now. Northing happened to NAP. It was forgotten as it will be again. This Government is unfit to continue anymore.
