The news that Punjab government intends to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1898 for registration of criminal cases and submission of challans in courts for trail is a welcome step as the move will help save time and money. Although the provincial government has approved the amendments however, it is the federal government that has the constitutional right to amend the CrPC. The move taken by the government highlights its firm resolve to play an effective role in maintaining law and order situation of the country. Considering the surge in crimes, it is hoped that the government will amend the CrPC on priority basis in order to avoid useless investigation and prosecution in courts.
