A 26-year old woman— who is the mother of two girl children—drowned her 26-day-old baby inside a water container all because she wanted a male child in her third attempt, in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh.

The incident took place at Kayadi village under Warseoni police station of the district. The woman was arrested and Rakhi alias Rajeshwari Sihore, 26, gave birth to a girl child around a month ago. She had two girl children and wanted to have a male child.

“She told her family members that a cat took away the infant and drowned her in a water container leading to her death. The family members did not inform police and buried the baby on July 24,” Warseoni police station incharge, Narendra Yadav.

We had a tip off about the incident, the body of the infant was exhumed and a post-mortem was carried out, the reports confirmed death due to drowning, but there were no marks on the body that could confirm that the girl was carried away by a cat, Yadav said.

“Further investigations were carried out and it was found that when the incident took place, the woman was alone with the infant. On being quizzed, she broke down and accepted the crime. She said that she desperately needed a male child,” Yadav said.
