Naegleria fowleri has claimed another life in Karachi, raising the death toll from brain-eating amoeba in the city to two this year.

Sources at Health Department confirmed that a 17-year-old boy Ahmed, son of Jamshed and resident of Shanti Nagar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal died in a private hospital on July 24.

They said this is the second death from Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the ‘brain-eating’ amoeba, reported this year from the city. Earlier, a 30-year-old Baldia Town resident Zahid Khan died from the virus.

However, Focal Person for the Naegleria Control Committee Dr Syed Zafar Mehdi denied death from Naegleria in the city and said it has not been confirmed so far.
