Pakistan lost five wickets in quick succession late in the day, managing 71 runs in response to England’s 589-8 declared in the first innings at stumps on the second day of the second Test at Old Trafford.

The match has been stopped due to rain.

Chris Woakes tore through Pakistan batting, claiming three for 18 in six overs as he sent Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali and nightwatchman Rahat Ali back to the pavilion. Hafeez, Azhar and Rahat were 18, 1 and 4, respectively.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who returned to the side after a knee injury forced him to sit out the first Test at Lord’s, had Younis Khan caught behind at 1.

Earlier on Saturday, Joe Root’s career-best 254 helped England post a solid 589 on the scoreboard, as he became the fourth England batsman to score a double ton against Pakistan in a Test match (after Denis Compton 278, Nottingham 1954, Ted Dexter 205, Karachi 1962 and current captain Alastair Cook 263, Abu Dhabi 2015).

Woakes and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow contributed 58 each to the England total. Skipper Alastair Cook scored 105.

England have not lost at Old Trafford since 2001 and have not lost a home Test batting first since 2012.

Pakistan trailed England by 532 runs at stumps on Saturday. They lead the four-match series 1-0 following their 75-run triumph in the first Test at Lord’s last week.
