Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) demanded on Friday the devolution of powers and resources to the local governments in the Punjab province and said that the provincial government was violating the spirit of democracy and laws.

Former Punjab Governor Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar said that the Punjab government was denying the elected representatives of third tier their legal rights to govern at the grassroots level. The provincial government was a one man show, he stated.

Instead of accumulating powers under a family, the government should give it where it belongs legally, to the local government representatives, he added.

He demanded to immediately hold elections for chairpersons at the level of district, tehsils and towns. He was of the opinion that the next general election would be a failed exercise, it the government did not hold census before it.  Delaying census amounts to disadvantaging the citizens and violating the constitution, he added.

It has been more than six months since the local government election, he reminded while adding that the long delay in the transfer of power to elected representatives was clear indication of the intentions of the government that was working to whims of one man. The people have given their mandate to the local governments, no matter what party they belong to, they should be given powers and funds to provide relief to the citizenry, he demanded.

Talking about the distribution of resources, he necessitated the conduct of census as early as possible to decide the needs of each district.
