The Move On Pakistan party Chairman Mian Kamran was arrested on Wednesday from Islamabad over charges of spreading anarchy and defaming the institution of the Army.
According to the party, the chairman was taken into custody from Islamabad’s Aabpara area where he was hiding in a guest house.
The Move On party has been recently involved in putting up thousands of banners in several cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi and Hyderabad seeking the army chief’s intervention.
The banners asking for an army coup appeared all over the country shortly after the Chairman US Senate’s Armed Services Committee, Senator John McCain, had said that he was deeply impressed by Pakistan Army Chief General Raheel Sharif’s leadership skills.
The US senator had also expressed hope that the general would continue to lead Pakistan.
One of the main party leaders, Ali Hashmi had said his party was registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The banners were deeply criticised by the political parties of the country. The major political parties upon the appearance of the pro-army-coup banners said that they firmly supported democracy.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had also said that the Army had no connection with the banners or the party.
