LHC disposes of plea for judges’ security

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday disposed of a petition seeking directions for the Punjab government to provide foolproof security to sitting and former judges and their families.

The single bench of LHC Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah heard the petition, filed by one Abdullah Malik.

The petitioner’s counsel, Muhammad Azhar Siddique, submitted that without fearless judges a society and nation could not survive.

He contended that judges spoke through their decisions therefore it was the constitutional duty of the elected government to provide foolproof security to the courts and the residences of judges so that their families could also live in a safe environment.

He prayed to the court to direct the government to provide foolproof security to judges and their families in accordance with articles 9, 14, and 25 of the constitution.

The court however disposed of the matter, observing that judges’ security was a sensitive issue and it was being reviewed.
