A summary seeking a 90-day extension in Rangers’ special powers has been forwarded to Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Monday.
Previously, the powers of the paramilitary forces were extended from May 4 till July 19.
Under the National Action Plan and the Anti-Terrorism Act, the federal cabinet had empowered Rangers to lead a targeted action with the support of police against criminals involved in targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism in Karachi.
The Rangers launched an operation against militants and criminals in Karachi in 2013.
Karachi has long been gripped by violence, with attacks carried out by militants as well as ethnic elements, criminal gangs and rival political parties.
Presently, the improved security situation in Karachi is one of the successes of the army’s ongoing security crackdown.
