Since no Pakistani movies were set to release this Eidul Fitr, except the not-so-hyped Sawal 700 Crore ka, Salman Khan starrer sports-drama film ‘Sultan’ kept the cinema houses booked.
Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner, Sultan did pretty good business in Pakistan, earning around Rs400 crore in its first week. Sultan revolves around the life story a middle-aged bulky guy Sultan (Salman Khan) who falls in love with a state-level wrestler Aarfa (Anushka Sharma) in his village Haryana, India.
Aarfa depicts a strong character of a wrestler who does not want emotions to come between her and her father’s long standing dream of winning an Olympics gold medal for India. When Sultan finally gathers the courage to propose the girl he had fallen in love with at first sight, Aarfa boldly refuses him, saying that he should gain some status and become a ‘respectable’ human first. She even does not find shame in calling Sultan a ‘sit-guy’ (shit guy).
Sultan, therefore, all heart-broken and doomed, gets on the mission of gaining ‘respect’ and decides to become a state champion in wrestling. This leads him to lots of success, making him over-confident and arrogant, and causing him the biggest loss of his life.
The movie gets a bit distorted in interval, as a new chapter of Sultan’s life instantly begins afterwards. Sultan falls and rises and remains lucky in finding some supporting people throughout in the form of his friend Govind (Anant Vidhaat Sharma), his trainers – Aarya’s father (Kumud Mishra) and Fateh (Randeep Hooda) – and Sultan’s presenter at Pro Takedown Aakash (Amit Sadh).
The movie contains several and strong messages. It touches the topic of women empowerment as Aarfa becomes a son to her father and is a female wrestler from a backward area. Sultan tells that family should be above and beyond all things, a person wins when he loses and most importantly, the hardest fight of a person is with no one but himself.
Sultan is funny, emotional and motivational and carries the essence of a usual Bollywood sports film. After the super hit Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman Khan has continued to amuse audiences with his amazing acting skills. The actor has finally surpassed his typical bhai-movies which had become his hallmark lately. Acting by Anushka Sharma, Randeep Hooda and Anant Vidhat in the movie is also commendable. The Haryanvi accent is also pulled off nicely by the actors.
Sultan is also being much appreciated on the social media and#SULTANFastest200cr also became the top trend on twitter as the movie recorded highest first week collection and broke previous records.

The music of the movie, produced by Vishal-Shekhar, did not seem up to the mark as only ‘Jag Ghoomeya’ was a good listen. ‘Baby ko bass pasand hai’ made no sense and watching the movie, it turned around that it is not actually the makeup product ‘base’. However, the title song ‘Sultan’ kept the audience enthusiastic.
The movie is unnecessarily long of two hours and 50 minutes and it gets hard to stick to such long movies. It moves from a faster pace to a slower one, then again to a faster one. But if you are a Bollywood fan, you will like it. It is an entertaining and family movie and if you have not watched it yet, go watch it!
