The Afghan government has asked the United States to put pressure on Islamabad to step back and let diplomatic efforts resolve the Torkham border management issue.

The Afghan government officials on Wednesday asked Washington to exert pressure on Islamabad to change its border policy and to stop creating further tension.

“We hope that the problems which we have with our neighbours, particularly with Pakistan, are settled through increased diplomatic pressure,” Ministry of Interior Affairs spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.

The statement came after Washington said it is closely watching the ongoing tension between both the countries in the aftermath of the recent clash at Torkham border gate which has resulted in casualties on both sides.

The Pakistani side says it is building the gate to stop militants from crossing the border.

Meanwhile, both the Afghan and Pakistani authorities have agreed on a ceasefire at Torkham border after three days of intense tensions that led to heavy firing.
