The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the appointment of the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by July 28.

Chief Justice SC Anwar Zaheer Jamali heard the case after he took suo moto notice of non-performance of functions by the ECP.

The chief justice remarked during the hearing that the nomination process should have started earlier so that the institution would not have been non-functional.

Upon which the Additional Attorney General told the court that consultation is going on with the opposition over the issue of nomination and after the 22nd Amendment the appointments would be carried out within 45 days.

During the hearing, the CJ inquired why the nomination process had not been completed before June 12.

He said that the main concern was not who was being consulted but the fact that had the process been started earlier, the institution would not have become inactive.

The Chief Justice stated that hopefully the same matter would not be stretched to six years since the inactivity of the ECP was affecting the whole system.

Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah had presided a meeting on Wednesday to finalize names of four members for the EC, however, the meeting ended without an agreement.
