The United States has again repeated its stance that border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan is still a safe haven for many terrorist groups.
State Department spokesperson John Kirby answering a question said the governments in Afghanistan and Pakistan know this themselves and have made efforts in the past to work together to try to address that threat.
He said the US is of the opinion that effort in this regard has not always gone smoothly, and we continue to urge those two governments to work together along that spine to eliminate the safe haven that so many groups there still enjoy, because those groups are targeting both Afghan and Pakistani civilians, innocent people that continue to die and be maimed by these groups
“So there’s a shared interest there, and that’s what we’re focused on. And we’re not focused on lines on the map; we’re focused on lines of the effort to go after these groups by both governments”, the spokesman said while answering a question about US stance on the Durand Line.
While Pakistan devotes the resourses for errecting a border fence to limit entry and exit to controlled access points, Afghanistan becomes a free beneficiary of the same. Both countries will have the opportunity to arrest at least known or suspected terrorists at the check points. Instead of blaming one another like they are doing now, they will have to blame themselves for not being able to screen out actual or potential terrorists. The entire fence could be controlled with a combination of small check posts, watch towers and small survailence drones day and night. It will also generate some employment for the jobless FATA youth and extra orders for Pakistan's drone industry.
