The Sindh Rangers arrested another member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Coordination Committee Izhar Ahmed Khan on Tuesday.
As per the details, Izhar Ahmed Khan has been arrested from Federal B Area in Karachi when he was having meeting with another party member.
Senior MQM leaders have also confirmed that Rangers took MQM’s Izhar Ahmed Khan into custody from the residence of another Coordination Committee member Abdul Haseeb in Federal B Area.
Izhar Ahmed Khan was at Abdul Haseeb’s residence in Karachi to inquire after his health, they said.
There was the case of extreme torture and death in Rangers custody of Aftab Ahmed, Media Coordinator of MQM top leader Farooq Sattar. Considering the seriousness of the offence, the army chief ordered an investigation but that was the end of it because nothing substantial has been heard about it since. In fact, during a recent visit, the army chief gave Rangers a pat on the back. Perhaps the 'pat on the back' has given more than adequate encouragement to the Rangers.
And then the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday ordered the insertion of murder section of the Pakistan Penal Code in the FIR that was registered against kidnapping of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) worker Riaz-ul-Haq whose dead body was found after 14 months of his disappearance.
And now we hear of the arrest by Rangers of MQM Coordination Committee member Izhar Ahmed Khan, a heart patient, as he came out of the residence of another MQM leader Abdul Haseeb who is sick and bedridden these days.
Perhaps it is all part of the campaign to pressure MQM members to change loyalty and to join PSP which offers the unique benefit of complete immunity to its joiners, irrespective of their past record.
While Rangers are here to improve law and order situation, and one must admit that they have brought significant improvement in the situation, though allegedly at substantial cost in terms of human rights. However, political re-engineering and map-change is no part of their job, neither are they qualified for it. In the past, some over-ambitious Generals jumped into the US revenge war with the Soviet Union, mass producing Taliban who, they hoped, will sort of conquer Afghanistan, and give Pakistan a strategic depth. However, instead of strengthening Pakistan by giving it strategic depth, they ended up endangering whatever was left of Pakistan. And on top of that, this 'clever move' spoiled further our relations with Afghanistan and created a space for India which is now firmly entrenched in Afghanistan. Sane Pakhtun leaders had strongly advised against this move but our people went on nevertheless and created this mess, which has spoiled things for us and has given us a bad name all over the world, as exporters of terrorism.
So, it it would be extremely unwise for the authorities to indulge in similar activities again, albeit on a much smaller scale.
I hope General Raheel Sharif takes serious note of the situation and asks Rangers to do their work in an impartial manner, strictly according to their mandate, and not get involved in activities which are no part of their job, and for which they are ill-qualified. They should keep in mind that such attempts failed in the past and will only complicate matters further. With more than enough problems there, it is definitely unwise to create additional ones needlessly
