Palm oil imports decrease by 3.04% in 11 months

Palm oil imports in the country during 11 months of financial year 2015-16 were reduced by 3.04 per cent compared to the corresponding period of last year.

According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), for the period July-May 2015-16, about 2,520,323 metric tonnes of palm oil valued at $1.54 billion was imported to fulfill the domestic requirements.

Palm oil import in the country was recorded at 2,118,533 metric tones, worth $1.59 billion in 11 months of the previous financial year (2014-15).

Meanwhile, import of milk cream and milk food for infants also decreased by 5.46 per cent during 11 months of financial year 2015-16, the PBS data showed.

About 75,004 metric tonnes of the above mentioned commodity was imported during 11 months costing $244.87 million as compared to import of 80,480 metric tones, worth $259.011 million.

No unmilled wheat was imported during the period under review.

It may be recalled that about 586,595 metric tonnes of unmilled wheat worth $185.43 million was imported during 11 months of the previous year (2014-15).

It may be recalled that overall food group import in the country registered an increase of 7.10 per cent during 11 months of the last financial year as food commodities worth $4.873 billion were imported.

The import of the food group was recorded at $4.54 billion during July-May 2014-15.
