The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday ordered the Sindh government to dismiss South Karachi’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farooq Ahmad in connection with Awais Shah’s kidnapping.

During the proceedings on the Karachi law and order case, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali commented, “If the government does not take the decision, we will issue the order (for dismissal).”

The SC on Thursday had taken a suo moto notice over political influence and interference in the Sindh police and had issued notices to the chief secretary, Sindh inspector general of police (IGP) and some others to explain the situation regarding the withdrawal of transfer orders of the SSP who was removed following Awais’s kidnapping in Clifton area of Karachi.

SSP Farooq, who was transferred on June 22 upon Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah’s directions, had been restored to the same position following extreme pressure.

The chief secretary presented his report in the court which stated that the SSP was transferred following which, the court observed that the transfer alone does not suffice and departmental action should be initiated against him.

SC Justice Amir Hani Muslim stated that when the SHO came to know about the incident, he said that the ‘agencies must have picked him up’.

Justice Muslim stated that the South SSP had helped the kidnappers owing to his criminal negligence.

The court also questioned the chief secretary as to why SSP South Farooq is still wearing his uniform.

The court also observed that the IGP should have all the powers regarding transfer and posting, and then should be questioned about law and order.

The court rejected a report of the Sindh government and directed the Parole director to submit a report at the next hearing.

The chief justice said that the criminals with long sentences are released on parole. He said those released on parole are those involved in kidnapping for ransom. He said the criminals who could not get bail are released on parole.  He said why an FIR should not be rejected against the Parole director and sent to jail in place of the accused.

On query by the chief justice, the Parole director said he is at the existing post for the last ten years.
