This year’s first death from dengue fever occurred at a private hospital in Karachi where a 58-year-old victim named Fareed-ud-Din succumbed to the deadly virus.
Fareed-ud-Din was a resident of Shah Faisal Colony and died in a private clinic during treatment.
According to the Dengue Surveillance Cell, this is the first death caused by dengue virus this year in Karachi. However, one death by dengue fever was reported from the interior Sindh in June.
The dengue fever is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and is a global public health concern. There is no vaccine available in Pakistan for the virus, which approximately kills 20,000 people each year and infects up to 100 million across the world, according to the World Health Organisation.
