More than 7,000 Afghan refugees have been arrested by Pakistani police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province over the past week, Afghan Consul General Abdullah Waheed Poyan said on Friday.

Poyan told TOLO News that harassment of Afghan refugees in Pakistan has reached at its peak and that they have discussed the issue with Pakistani officials.

“Unfortunately, after the Torkham dispute, harassment of Afghan refugees increased to its highest level; therefore, I and the Afghan ambassador [Omar Zakhilwal] talked about the issue with Pervez Khattak, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in order to address the problem,” Poyan said.

He said that “nearly 10,000 families have promised to voluntarily return to Afghanistan after Eidul Fitr”.

Meanwhile, a number of Afghan refugees spoke of mistreatment by Pakistani police against the Afghans living Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said.

“I urge Afghan government to do something for us. Police and even the people mistreat Afghan refugees here in Pakistan. This problem must be solved. Up to 7,000 refugees were arrested over the past few days,” Feda, an Afghan refugee in Pakistan, was quoted as having said by TOLO News.

  1. Finally Afghan officials are waking up. They had forgotten their own people for last 30 years.
