Waiting for the PM

Brace yourselves

Unmindful of the stiffening attitude of the opposition, the PML-N is reportedly fixated on arranging a historic welcome for the prime minister. Other reports tell of the PML-N leader being advised to hold a public meeting on his return. Any show of power by the PML-N would exacerbate the prevailing tension leading the opposition to put up its own show of power. If a competition is initiated with the opposition, the PMLN might find it difficult to win the race for crowd pulling.

As the prime minister returns after a major surgery, an environment characterised by war cries is the last thing he would need.   It would be advisable therefore to try to reach a compromise with the opposition so that the prime minister can deal with the heavy agenda that awaits his return in a soothing environment.

The tendency in Nawaz Sharif to personally take decisions on all important issues has posed problems in the past and would increasingly do so in future. This explains why he is reluctant to temporarily hand over the office to a mature party leader. He is reportedly keen to delegate some of his powers to Maryam Nawaz by entrusting her with an office like the special advisor to the prime minister with the status of a federal minister. This could be the first step towards appointing her the heir apparent. Having no official status in the party or government, she could do little more than receiving foreign dignitaries coming to Prime Minster House to wish him recover soon. Entrusting her with a government office may not be a bad idea provided she is able to display the required political maturity which remains to be seen.

The issues that have landed on the PM’s desk are by no means simple ones. He has to move ahead to pull the country out its isolation in the region, select a new COAS, nominate EC members and put up a good show in AJK elections due in the last week of July. Much will depend on how he manages his relations with the opposition.

  1. Nawaz Sharif was never known for hard work.A few civil servants dispose of his files. He does not read or write, known for his verbal style of administration. The only book in his drawing/bed room is the telephone directory.

  2. I doubt if the PM would ever return unless the very problem of Panama Issue is solved – his way. Those unauthorised people running the Government without it's head may lay the red-carprt only to be re-rolled. Or keep one more ready for Mr 10%. Acho Saian !
