After recent spectacular failure of the Karachi police in the shape of kidnapping of the son of Sindh High Court Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, the government has decided to beef up policing of the city with the help of 7000 surveillance cameras in different parts of the city.

The high profile kidnapping exposed the tall claims of bureaucracy and brought huge embracement for the police and home department, said inner sources. However, as a damage control strategy, the provincial government has decided to beef up the security of the city with the help of surveillance cameras. The police in every mega city of the world take help from images captured by their thousands of surveillance cameras in early detection of crime.

Separately, a high-level meeting at the Central Police Office (CPO) on Thursday discussed the security of the city with special reference to installation of surveillance cameras.

The meeting led by Sindh Inspector General of Police AD Khuwaja sought a detailed report within three days regarding the installation of 1000 surveillance cameras of 10 megapixels at 200 sensitive locations of the city.

He asked to conduct a survey of the city after Eidul Fitr, regarding the installation of 7000 surveillance cameras, so that permission could be obtained from the provincial government in this regard.
