India said that no one in the global economy can equate it with Pakistan on the issue of signing the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), even as New Delhi admitted that its diplomatic efforts to secure membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) failed to yield desired results.
India’s External Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said that “There are some processes that take a long time. I would evaluate the NSG membership process in that category.”
Swarup tried to clarify that only China opposed India’s NSG membership. “There was only one country which persistently raised procedural hurdles, as a result of which no decision could be arrived at in Seoul and we stick to that stand. As far as other countries are concerned, there are some who raised procedure related issues, but not a single country apart from that one country opposed India’s NSG membership.”
He added that New Delhi will continue to engage Beijing over NSG membership ahead of the second meeting of the group later this year.
