3-year LLB violative of legal education rules: PBC

Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has expressed dismay over advertisements of some universities regarding admission to three-year LLB programme for the academic year 2016-17.

Chairing a meeting of Legal Education Committee of PBC here, its chairman Muhammad Shoaib Shaheen said the three-year LLB programme was violative of the Pakistan Bar Council Legal Education Rules, 2015.

He said under the rules, the universities imparting legal education, were required to give admissions for the academic year 2016-17 on the basis five-year LLB programme instead of three-year LLB programme as the latter stood abolished after the promulgation of the ‘Pakistan Bar Council Legal Education Rules, 2015’ in December 2015. All the universities, he said, were duly informed soon after promulgation of the Rules vides letters dated 22-01-2016.

The committee called upon all the universities imparting legal education to ensure that admission to LLB classes for the academic year 2016-17, must be made on the basis of 5-year LLB programme, as required under the rules and in case of failure on the part of any university to  do so, would render it to an action which may extend even to its de-recognition.

It also advised the students desirous to get admission in LLB  classes for the academic year 2016-17 to note that their admission and acquiring the degree of 5-year LLB programme would only make them eligible for enrolment as the advocate with a bar council.
