Karachi Corps Commander Lieutenant General Naveed Mukhtar visited Abdul Sattar Edhi at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on Tuesday to inquire about his health.
The meeting comes three days after the Foreign Office inadvertently issued a condolence message “on the demise” of the philanthropist, before retracting the statement.
Lt Gen Mukhtar said Edhi was the pride of the nation and was the name of humanity and compassion. Edhi had proved that all good deeds could be performed with perseverance despite all hindrances, the corps commander added.
On June 12, Army chief General Raheel Sharif and his wife had sent a bouquet and a card to Edhi, wishing a healthy and peaceful life. Earlier, Edhi turned down former president Asif Ali Zardari’s offer to be flown abroad for medical treatment, saying he would prefer to receive treatment in Pakistan.
In the past, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and real estate tycoon Malik Riaz also offered to help Edhi in his treatment but he turned them down their offers.
Edhi was diagnosed with kidney failure in June 2013 and was told by doctors that he would have to be on dialysis for the rest of his life.
