An Indian cricket player currently on tour Zimbabwe with the Asian country National team has been arrested for allegedly raping a local woman on Friday.

Harare Assistant Police Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed an Indian national’s involvement in the matter, stating members of the country’s state board are attempting to solve the issue. The incident occurred at Meikles hotel in Central Harare, where the team is staying to complete it’s remaining T-20 fixtures.

According to sources from the hotel, the victim was loitering in the hotel lobby before being drugged and allegedly abused. Charity said, “The victim has pointed an Indian national from the batch that came in last week, at this point I’m not in the position to reveal whether it’s a player or official as I’m bound by law. But, what I can confirm is that the accused appeared in court on Saturday.”

She added, “We have concluded our investigation, but both the police and courts have to handle the issue with care as it can lead to a potential diplomatic feud.”

The Meikel’s hotel in Harare where the players are residing is thoroughly scrutinized by the police and officials from country’s intelligence amid speculations of an Indian cricketer involved in the incident. However, the identity of the player is undisclosed as of now.

The source added, “Certain senior officials from India were seen in the hotel, attempting to pacify the situation. They spoke to the woman, and several of the city’s law makers.”

Meanwhile, India, who have been touring Zimbabwe, has faced a set back as Zimbabwe came out on top in a nerve-racking first T20I as they eventually prevailed by 2 runs.

It remains to be seen who the player would be in the upcoming days as the player’s name is not disclosed by anyone so far and also a legal action by BCCI awaits if the player is found guilty of the crime.
