A Lahore High Court division bench on Wednesday stopped the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from taking further action against former premier Raja Pervez Ashraf while suspending summons for his appearance before the bureau in an inquiry into alleged bogus recruitment in Gepco.

The bench also sought reply from the NAB within two weeks.

Justice Mehmood Maqbool Bajwa and Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry passed these orders on a petition filed by Raja Pervez Ashraf challenging NAB summons for his appearance in an inquiry into alleged bogus recruitment in Gepco.

Earlier, Pervez Ashraf’s counsel Iftikhar Shahid, Jamal Ashraf and others submitted that the petitioner was being politically victimised by the bureau and dragged into the scandal on baseless grounds.

They said the NAB was asked to furnish details of the allegations but the bureau kept issuing summons to the petitioner, without disclosing any reason.

They further said that the Pepco and Gepco were independent institutions as they make their own policies and decisions. They said that being minister for water and power, the petitioner never influenced the appointments in the sector.

They prayed to the court to set aside the notices/summons issued to him by NAB for being illegal. They also requested the court to stop NAB from harassing the petitioner.

The bench after hearing initial arguments stayed NAB from further action against the petitioner and sought reply within two weeks.
