SCO provides platform to Pak, India for socio-economic partnership

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will provide a platform to Pakistan and India to build up their socio-economic partnership and promote a spirit of brotherhood.

The two countries are going to become its full members that will make the organization powerful to handle regional conflicts and to address their socio-economic issues like energy, stated the General Secretary of SCO Rashid Alimov at a news briefing on Tuesday at the organization’s headquarters.

He told the visiting journalists from regional countries including Pakistan that it has already decided in principle to accept the two countries as their full members. Earlier, they were enjoying Observers’ status.

Welcoming the entry of the two countries into SCO’s net as their regular members, Alimov said it was a major development in the history of SCO. Pakistan and India, he hoped will come up with positive contributions in achieving the organization’s charter. Both the countries have a common history, culture and values. Their participation as full members will be a good omen for the organization’s future growth.

When asked about the timeline of their joining, he said the process may take six months, since both of them have to meet certain prerequisites. Their Parliaments have to adopt all documents of the SCO as required under its laws. The main document is titled ‘Good neighbourhood’.
