Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday that those involved in corruption will have to peep into their own consciences and be held accountable for $60 million of the nation’s money deposited in Swiss Banks.
Relations between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have soured in recent months and the government appears to be getting frustrated with the PPP which continues to present tough opposition to the government over the Panama Leaks. In recent weeks, the government has also started a counter-drive calling for accountability of Pakistani holders of Swiss accounts.
While the ruling family has become the face of the Panama Leaks scandal, the Swiss accounts scandal is considered is mainly associated with Asif Zardari and the PPP.
The FBR, according to the government, is in talks with the Swiss authorities to get the names of the Pakistanis who have accounts in Swiss banks.
According to reports, former president Asif Ali Zardari reprimanded Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Khursheed Shah for going soft on the PML-N, and even asked his party’s legal brains to file disqualification references against the prime minister and his close associates.
