Shaukat Aziz’s book has some people riled up, including the man who made him the prime minister. And the one who made him the finance minister. Yes, former President Pervez Musharraf hasn’t taken too kindly to some of the accounts of the Citibank veteran’s autobiography.
About the coup of 2007 — made famous as “Emergency Plus” and “The only time a dictator has staged a coup against himself” — Aziz says he wasn’t taken on board. The general, on the other hand, had been saying all along that it was a decision presented for him to sign off on.
Secondly, he took credit for turning the economy around, which the following governments messed up. Though the verdict on whether he actually turned the economy around is not out yet but, if we were to accept that, even then it would mean that it wasn’t a structural change, strong enough to withstand the next government.
Expect to read more on him in the near future. When everyone’s gloves come off.
