Counsel for the Edhi Foundation on Saturday filed a written statement in family court to the plea filed by Chaudhry Iqbal seeking custody of Abdullah.

The hearing was adjourned until June 15 while Abdullah will stay in Edhi’s custody until further directives.

Counsel for Faisal Edhi, son of Edhi, who owns the welfare organisation, maintained in the court that it was yet to be proved whether Iqbal was Abdullah’s father. The counsel requested the court to order submission of marriage certificate and divorce papers. He further urged the court to order DNA tests of both the alleged father and son.

The court was also requested to inquire Iqbal about evidence of sending maintenance to ex-wife Haleema during her stay in Karachi.

The court ordered maternal uncle of the child to prove his relation for the case to proceed. Abdullah’s uncle urged the court to record his statement besides his father. The judge said the court did not want to record statement of Abdullah’s maternal grandmother but to conduct its identification process.

The Iqbal’s counsel maintained that investigation officer had his client’s and murdered Haleema’s identity cards.

On the other hand, Rizwan’s wife, pleaded innocence in the court after she went on to say that her husband was in contact with different women. Her counsel requested the court to acquit her for she was not involved in the crime. The court however summoned police file in the case for any decision.
