Rights activist and columnist Marvi Sirmed on Friday claimed that Senator Hafiz Hamdullah of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) had abused and almost hit her during a TV talk show. Hamdullah denies Sirmed’s charge.

The senator is infamous for his bad temper and has, in the past, threatened many guests during TV shows.

According to details, during a TV show on a private news channel, Hafiz Hamdullah got annoyed at a comment made by Barrister Masroor, another guest taking part in the discussion. When it was her turn to speak, Sirmed started her comment by saying “I agree with Masroor sahib to the extent that…” but was interrupted by the senator.

There began an argument. And it escalated very soon.

Sirmed, in her Facebook post and through her tweets, described what happened thereafter.

She says, “he started abusing me with worst possible expletives. Called me a whore and said “tumhaari shalwaar utaar doonga aur tumhaari maa ki bhi (sic).” and that translates to “I will strip you off your Shalwaar and will do the same to your mother too.”

When Sirmed responded with a “try that with women in your own family”, Hamdullah allegedly tried to beat her. Another guest on the show, Fayaz ul Hassan Chauhan, held Hamdullah back, and Sirmed was saved from his punches, she claims in her post.

She says, “He had to be taken away by the News One security.”

Sirmed ends her Facebook post saying “And this religious merchant was fasting while he did all this.”

Talking to Pakistan Today, Hafiz Hamdullah said that during the discussion, Barrister Masroor had said that had Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Chairman Maulana Sheerani “smoked hashish” as he had not passed any comment over the increasing incidents involving violence against women.

“Is this the way to speak about an 80-year-old religious scholar? Naturally I lost my temper and a heated exchange took place between me and Marvi Sirmed. I must have said something offensive in anger but Marvi was no less as she had hurled abuses at my deceased mother,” he claimed.

He claimed that the matter “was settled” at the sets later but the civil society activist is now posting baseless allegations against him on the social media.

  1. I failed to understand what Marvi Sarmad is doing in Pakistan. She is born in India where women are abused more than Pakistan.she is required there. We can handle our affairs with out her. She is launched by India. Also analysis which all channels sponsore her.
    Maulana’s action is also condemnable.
