Police on Thursday declared Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain, Convener Nadeem Nusrat and another leader Muhammad Anwar as absconders in the murder case of Shahid Hamid.

Defense police submitted a challan with the administrative judge of ATC according to which Minhaj Qazi, who is currently in jail, along with Saulat Mirza, was involved in the killing of then managing director of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) – now known as K-Electric (KE) – Shahid Hamid in 1997.

According to the challan, other accused including MQM Chief, Nusrat and Akhtar could not be arrested. Earlier, the widow of slain KESC MD and his son identified Minhaj Qazi as one the shooter who gunned down Hamid in Defense Housing Authority.

Qazi remained off the scene but he was arrested by Rangers in February this year. He spent 90-day in preventive detention of the paramilitary force over his alleged involvement in the offences which fall within the ambit of Anti Terrorism Act.

Later, he was handed over to Nabi Bux police on the charges of possessing weapons without license.

During interrogation in the case pertaining to possessing illicit weapons, Qazi had confessed his involvement in Shahid Hamid’s murder. After his confession, the murder case had been reopened almost one-year after the hanging of Saulat Mirza.

Shahid Hamid, along with his driver Ashraf Barohi and guard Akbar Khan, was shot dead in 1997 in Defense Housing Authority (DHA), Karachi. It is pertinent to mention here that Saulat Mirza, one of the main suspects in the case, was hanged in Mach Jail Balochistan in May last year.
