Imtiaz supermarket to face partial closure after traffic nightmare

After a recently opened Imtiaz Supermarket in Gulshan-e-Iqbal badly failed to come up with its own parking space amid poor planning, Special Judicial Magistrate East Karachi has issued partial closure orders to the store owners keeping public interest in view.

The store will now be closed from 3:30pm till 9:30 pm, said the court orders. However, it added if the owners of the store could not manage to come up with their specific parking space, then action would be taken to seal the store.

According to the orders issued, residents living in the area near the store have been suffering since the launch of the self-proclaimed biggest supermarket of Pakistan.

The Imtiaz Supermarket issue came into limelight on May 27 when the store attracted thousands of shoppers on its opening day and even beyond, causing hours-long massive traffic jam on the Rashid Minhas Road.

All roads leading to the supermarket seem to have been either barricaded or set aside for a parking facility for employees of the supermarket. Meanwhile, the traffic police appear to have failed to manage the flow of heavy traffic in the vicinity.

The store management has provided a makeshift parking arrangement inside the Lyari riverbed but the authorities have asked it to either silt the river or prepare to be shut down.
